bioOrlando, originally a program of the Metro Orlando EDC, continues to gain momentum and convene Metro Orlando’s life science community as the Central Chapter of BioFlorida. As part of BioFlorida, bioOrlando is not only able to support the activities of our local industry, but also has a strong state voice. BioFlorida is Florida’s life science industry association representing more than 3,000 companies and research organizations in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device fields, which together employ over 61,000 Floridians. BioFlorida’s member-driven initiatives provide a strong business climate for production of quality, life-improving technologies and promote economic benefits to the state.Most recently, bioOrlando hosted its Central Chapter event at theSanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona. The program entitled “From Startup to Exit: Intellectual Property Strategies to Max Your Bottom Line” featured a panel discussion led by Barbara Kitchell, PhD, JD, from Saliwanchik, Lloyd & Eisenschenk. The panel discussed strategies and issues affecting life science companies at any stage, including angel investors, commercialization, patents, R&D and corporate buys. Panelists included Charles Dennis, JD, Medtronic, Inc.; Patricia Lawman, Ph.D., Morphogenesis, Inc. and Dan O’Korn, JD, Hutchison Law Group.
