Glen “Big Baby” Davis to Visit Sanford Summer Camp 06/21/12

Orlando Magic Player to Visit Sanford Summer Camp

Glen “Big Baby” Davis has a reputation for bringing a positive attitude, a healthy sense of humor, and of course, impressive athleticism to the Orlando Magic. This summer, he brings the magic to a non-profit summer camp in Sanford, Florida – Sunshine Grove.

On Thursday, June 28th, Mr. Davis will visit Sunshine Grove, a prevention program operated by The Grove Counseling Center. Sunshine Grove  focuses on positivity, healthy living, decision-making, goal-setting, avoiding peer pressure, and learning from mistakes. Located in the Goldsboro neighborhood of Sanford, the camp is offered free of charge to families.

This year, 70% of participants are receiving government assistance, including food stamps and Medicaid. However, there are no criteria to meet to qualify. “We do our best to make this camp accessible to families,” says Chelsea Dygan , Associate Director of Outreach and Prevention at The Grove Counseling Center. “We’re in our second summer of operation now, and the response has been fantastic. We start with an evidence-based curriculum, one proven to increase protective factors as our kids approach an age where substance abuse and other dangerous behaviors become more of a temptation. Then, we add community guests, passionate instructors, good food, sports, the arts, and a whole lot of fun.”

If you have a child between the ages of first and sixth grade, there are still slots available in the July session of Sunshine Grove. Call(407) 327-1765 or email outreach@thegrove.org for more information. Grab a spot – you never know who’ll show up!
