Perfect Harmony: OCPS Music Teachers Take their Love of Performance to a Broader Stage
Ten Orange County Public School (OCPS) music teachers are taking their passion for singing beyond the classroom. As members of a highly select, auditioned choir called Festival Singers of Florida (FSOF), they perform in Florida, inspiring audiences with the joy of choral performances.
FSOF sings a diverse repertoire ranging from classics and sacred pieces to post-modern accompaniments. The group is composed of 60 members from all over the state, many of whom teach music at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Four weekends a year, they gather for rehearsals and concerts – some driving as far as 450 miles. They volunteer their time and pay for travel expenses out of their own pockets, all for the love of singing and performing.
Alex Pollard, choral director at Union Park Middle School, joined FSOF as a college student in 2009 and continues to sing in the group. “It’s unusual for a choir to get together for a couple hours over the weekend and prepare a full, high-quality concert,” he says. “But it’s possible when you work with talented, dedicated people.”
Inspired by the spirit of lifelong learning, these incredible individuals have found an artistic outlet that brings their passion for music and love of teaching together in perfect harmony. The group’s fifth season begins Saturday, Oct. 6 at Winter Park Presbyterian Church at 7:30 pm. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased online or at the door. Visit www.fsof.org for more information.
