What:  23rd International Carillon Festival
Who: Bok Tower Gardens
Why: Celebrating more than 88 years of musical and cultural heritage, the highly anticipated music festival features world-renowned carillonneurs performing daily concerts. (Daily concerts are included in general admission.)
When:  Festival occurs Saturday, March 4 through Sunday, March 12, 2017 with concerts at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Visitor Center also features historical exhibits on the history, construction and sound of the carillon from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This year’s carillon festival features the exciting debut of original carillon pieces composed in 1930’s for the Singing Tower by famed composers Rosario Scalero and Gian Carlo Menotti recently rediscovered in the archives of  the Curtis Institute of Music. Gardens’ Carillonneur Geert D’hollander will perform the world premiere of two Scalero compositions on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m. Guest carillonneur Lisa Lonie will play the Menotti pieces on Thursday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m.

In addition to the rediscovered music, Garden’s Carillonneur Geert D’hollander will play two world premiere compositions commissioned for the International Carillon Festival by recent Blanchard Fellowship recipient Julie Zhu and Collins Fellowship recipient Joey Brink. The world premieres of these compositions will take place on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 12 during the 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. concerts.

The 23rd International Carillon Festival is supported and sponsored in part by The State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and Don & Pat Jones, Dr. Frank & Carol Drake, Paul & Carol Collins, Ted & Ann Probert, Lawrence and Genevieve Dimmitt in memory of A. Bronson Thayer, past board chairman of Bok Tower Gardens.

Concert: $10 per person; free for members
Concert & Reception: $35 person; $25 member
Enjoy a Moonlight Concert with cocktail reception to follow in the Outdoor Kitchen.

Singing Tower Exterior Tour
March 6-1012:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Included in general admission
Learn more about the Singing Tower’s history with a guided tour of the exterior.

Goldfish Carillon Children’s Concert
March 8, 10:00 a.m.
Included in general admission
Children are invited to experience a musical presentation of interactive carillon music and healthy snacks.

Moonlight Mix and Mingle Carillon Concert
March 10, 7:30 p.m.
Concert: $10 per person; free for members
Concert & Reception: $35 person; $25 member
Spend an evening under the stars with cocktail reception to follow at Pinewood Estate.

23rd INT’L CARILLON FESTIVAL GUEST CARILLONNEURS

KOEN COSAERT
Koen Cosaert was appointed by the city council of Mechelen, Belgium as fifth director of the Royal Carillon School “Jef Denyn”, one of the leading institutes for carillon art in the world. Since 1987, Koen Cosaert has taught carillon, campanology, harmony and music theory at the Royal Carillon School and at its department in Roeselare.

FRANS HAAGEN
Frans Haagen is currently working as the city carillonneur of Kampen, Almelo, Holten, Zutphen and Doesburg. He is the carillon professor and Principal of the Dutch Carillon School in Amersfoort, part of the HKU Utrecht University of the Arts.

LISA LONIE
Lisa Lonie is the university carillonneur of Princeton University (New Jersey), and resident carillonneur at two area churches: St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh (Pennsylvania), and at The Church of the Holy Trinity (Philadelphia) which houses the oldest carillon (1882) in North America.

ELLEN DICKINSON
Ellen is the College Carillonneur at Trinity College, and is teacher and adviser to the Yale Guild of Carillonneurs and bell consultant to the University. As part of the North American Carillon School team, Ellen is an instructor for the New England region.
