Indie Lens Pop-Up Series: NEWTOWN

February 24, 2017 @ 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

The Global Peace Film Festival and ITVS will host a documentary and panel discussion about, NEWTOWN. Filmed over three years, the documentary by director Kim A. Snyder and producer Maria Cuomo Cole offers a window into the lives of people deeply affected by the deadliest mass shooting of schoolchildren in America. Through first-person testimonies, the film shows how a community still reeling from a senseless tragedy and fractured by grief can come together. NEWTOWN will air in March 2017 on Independent Lens on PBS.

A panel discussion will follow the film: Dr. Julie Kessel, former 25-year forensic psychiatrist president of the St. Petersburg League of Women Voters, director of the League of Women Voters State Board and advisory board member for the Florida Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence; UCF Deputy Police Chief Brett Meade, associate director of safety and security for UCF and former 25-year patrol commander for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office; Reverend Jenn Stiles Williams, co-lead pastor at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church; and David Barden, cousin to Mark Barden who lost his son, Daniel, at Sandy Hook and attorney based in Lake Mary. The panel will be moderated by Patti Brigham, first vice president for the League of Women Voters of Florida.
