Two Patriotic Plays You Don’t Want to Miss

Independence Day Weekend
Beat-the-Clock Discounts

While the War for Independence raged in 1776, America’s founding fathers argued passionately to define the American personality, setting into motion a courageous experiment in democracy—be it discordant or harmonious, always aspiring to be “more perfect.” As this election year proves, America has never lost its love for argument. Join John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and others as they hatch the American Dream. Mad Cow is thrilled to present 1776, a beloved Tony Award-winning musical celebrating a revolutionary moment … but with a bold new voice: all female. Move over Founding Fathers. The Mothers have arrived!

In this intriguing exploration of personal values, a good man — a respected veteran and established senator — has a chance to become a national leader. He is everything the nation needs and probably wants — wise, moderate, honorable, honest. One problem: he doesn’t believe in God. In The God Game, Suzanne Bradbeer presents the ultimate litmus test of American politics and explores the limits of loyalty, family, truth, ambition, and faith. A cliff-hanger until the very last moment, the play “feels very much of the moment, contemporary and relevant in the best ways, and yet it also addresses eternal questions.”—Times-Union

Notions to Ponder — An Afternote to the Discount
1776 and The God Game were deliberately scheduled in a manner that prompts Mad Cow’s audiences to look at two distinct visions of our national personality … and to look during a time that matters: a historic national election.

1776 is populated by historical icons and steeped in the traditions of American musicals but given a unique twist by putting it in female voices—possibly a deciding voice in contemporary politics. The God Game is a contemporary play that calls into question what it takes to achieve a position of national leadership in a world of shifting alliances and values.

We hope these two shows, scheduled adjacently to one another during a time of heightened political awareness, will excite a valuable conversation in our community. Here are some questions and notions they may prompt:

  • Is our collective national story altered when told in women’s voices?
  • How have we changed the image of our historical icons in service to more contemporary politics?
  • How is our current struggle with equal rights different than that experienced by our founding fathers?
The God Game:
  • Is it possible to elect a national leader who is not faith-guided?
  • To what extent does the religion question force our leaders to lie?
  • How do we cope with religious and/or political differences in our national home? In our domestic homes?
  • How do we—and our leaders—trim our authenticity to serve our ambitions? When and how do we go too far?
  • “Truthiness” vs. Truth.
