National Rebuilding Day

Rebuilding Together Orlando (RTO) is coming off a banner year for 2012. This time last year, RTO took on 13 projects around the Central Florida area for National Rebuilding Day. It’s that time of year again. RTO is preparing for another good season of helping those less fortunate by repairing their homes. National Rebuilding Day (NRD) is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2013. RTO is anticipating an amazing event with hundreds of volunteers and great enthusiasm from our community.

Orlando Harley-Davidson to Host I-4 Motorcycle Ride and After-Party to Benefit Local Chapter of BIKERS AGAINST CHILD ABUSE®

Motorcycle Ride Event to Benefit Bikers Against Child Abuse

On Sunday, January 20, 2013, Orlando Harley-Davidson will host a pair of events benefiting the Tri-County Chapter of BIKERS AGAINST CHILD ABUSE® (B.A.C.A.).

POLICE ESCORTED MOTORCYCLE RIDE
Starting at 11:45 a.m., the motorcycle convoy will travel on I-4 from Downtown Disney® West Side to the Orlando Harley-Davidson Historic Factory Dealership off of
I-4, located at 3770 37th St, Orlando, Florida 32805. (Note: I-4 will be closed to the public during this time.)

Ride registration will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Downtown Disney® West Side Parking Lot N (adjacent to Cirque du Soleil – La Nouba), and requires a $10 donation (cash or check) per rider, and a $5 donation per passenger. Donations will benefit Tri-County B.A.C.A.’s efforts to prevent child abuse.

A note from the Tri-County Chapter of B.A.C.A.: “We would like to invite riders of all skill level to this ‘patch friendly’ event. Whether you are new riding or have adopted a ‘Live To Ride, Ride To Live’ lifestyle, we would love to see the entire spectrum of motorcyclists and bikers helping to create awareness of the struggle to put an end to child abuse. Imagine the message this will send throughout Central Florida. No child should live in fear!!”

THE AFTER-PARTY
From noon to 3 p.m., hundreds of riders and members of the public will be treated to entertainment and food, including live music by Diablo Canyon and a host of rider-related activities.

Attendance is free and open to the public. Ride participants will receive free food and beverage upon arrival. Food and beverage will be available for purchase for non-ride participants.

Orlando Holiday Concert: Sounds of Freedom Band

Central Florida LGBT Band Gives Holiday Concert at The Abbey Dec 2

The 32-member concert ensemble will include both Orlando-area Sounds of Freedom band members and guests from South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble in Fort Lauderdale. The performance will feature A Charlie Brown Christmas, Chanukah Suite, and I’ll Be Home for Christmas as well as small ensemble features.

“We are very excited to perform this concert for the community,” said co-founder and President Juan Canasi. “We’ve got a diverse program and we plan on spreading holiday cheer to everyone, no matter what their beliefs are.”

Founded in the summer of 2011, Central Florida Sounds of Freedom is an LGBT and ally community band and color guard based in the Orlando area, whose mission is to provide exceptional music, entertainment and inspirational services for LGBT and other community based organizations. Since its inception, the group has performed in two of Orlando’s Come Out With Pride parades, the inaugural Volusia Pride festival, Orlando Fringe Festival, and other community performances. The group promotes acceptance and equality through performances ranging from parades, concerts and ensemble performances. Orlando Philharmonic Young Patrons Group Hosts Mixer for Young Professionals

On Monday, November 12the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Patrons Group, Overture, will host a Membership Mixer at Shakai Sushi in Downtown Orlando from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

The mixer is a social event for music enthusiasts in their 20s, 30s and 40s who want to meet like-minded young professionals and learn more about the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. Admission is $20, and includes sushi, drinks and opportunities to mingle with young orchestra musicians. Special guests, Principal Violist Mauricio Céspedes Rivero and Principal Oboe Jame Strefeler, will speak about what it’s like to play in the orchestra. Attendees will also get a sneak peak at Overture’s 2012-2013 events schedule, and an opportunity to become a member of Overture at a special rate of $20, good through August 2014.

Orlando Science Center Neanderthal Ball 2012

Party like a caveman at the Orlando Science Center’s sixth annual Neanderthal Ball on Saturday, Nov. 3! From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., examine real fossils, chisel out your mark in the silent auction or witness the latest in prehistoric fashion in the first-ever Harriett Lake Caveman Couture Contest! It’s a night of ROCKin’ fun in the dinosaur exhibit to benefit youth education programs at the Science Center.

 New to this year’s event is Harriett Lake Caveman Couture Contest. Harriett Lake is one of Central Florida’s most generous philanthropists and donates to more than 100 charities each year. Not only is she sponsoring the contest, but she is also judging it! Participants can go as far as wearing a frock, an animal print tie, a leopard pattern cocktail dress, or even putting a bone in their hair!
