Local Filmmaker Enters 2015 Academy Awards Race

by: @jenvargas

Earlier today, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced submissions for next year’s Oscar race. Will we see a Florida filmmaker on the Red Carpet at the 87th Annual Academy Awards in 2015? Anything is possible! Below is a really LONG list of films in the running (just to be considered!) for a Documentary Feature nomination… but we hope to see Florida representing next year!

All 134 of the documentary feature films listed below have submitted their work *just to be considered* for a place (out of 15) on the Academy Awards’ ShortList. What you may not know is this; Fulfilling The Academy’s requirements just to be considered is a long, detailed process involving scheduled east and west coast screenings, several written reviews and many more steps just to advance in the voting process. Submitted films may also qualify for other categories, aside from Documentary Feature, should they fulfill the other category requirements for which they may be eligible.

One of the 134 films submitted is called, “Tanzania: A Journey Within.” Emmy Award winner and DeLand resident, Sylvia Caminer and her production team from DolGer Films, Directed and Co-Produced this documentary feature film, which premiered in New York City on World Malaria Day in support of non-profit organization, Malaria No More.

The film takes place in and around the United Republic of Tanzania, located in East Africa, and follows the journey of two University of Miami graduates, Kristen Kenney and Venance Ndibalema. The film asks the question; “What happens when a scientist/philosopher from an impoverished African nation takes his American friend on a journey to the place where humankind began?”

While the ShortList announcement won’t happen until some time in December, the 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. ET at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. (www.oscars.org will live stream the noms.)

The Oscars® live telecast will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood (with Neil Patrick Harris as host!), and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
