Art in Odd Places Festival Makes Orlando Debut Sept. 17-20

If you haven’t yet done anything of particular interest this summer, this is your chance to take some intriguing selfies and tuck away some conversation pieces for your next dinner party. The opportunity to contemplate the meaning of a red light bulb in a gum ball machine, explore your city’s unique symphonic sound or reach out and touch a “street urchin” does not come around often, so mark your calendars for the Art in Odd Places festival (AiOP). This new-to-Orlando event is an annual international visual and performance public art festival making its O-town debut downtown from September 17-20 along Magnolia Avenue.

The festival’s theme is TONE, so expect interpretations of tone ranging from the notions of sound and color to character and skin tone. Artists will transform Magnolia Avenue into a laboratory of sorts, stretching the boundaries of public communication outside the confines of traditional public spaces through visual and audio installations and performances. “By introducing Orlando to Art in Odd Places, we hope it will locate the cracks in public space policies, and to inspire the popular imagination for new possibilities and engagement with civic space,” said Barbara Hartley, executive director of the Downtown Arts District (DAD).

The inaugural event will feature nearly 50 works of art in a variety of disciplines from artists around the globe, including 27 from Orlando, five from within Florida, 15 from across the United States and two from across the pond (England and Ireland).

On the fence about attending? Be careful — the Pied Piper may lure you into an art experience via his theremin bike… yes, I said, beware the theremin bike!

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the low-brow/high-brow/what-brow-is-this nature of an art festival like this, you can always start in the Reading Room, a popup immersive space for reading and learning about the rich history and context of contemporary performance art. I don’t blame you for trying to understand; however, performance art is generally more fun, sometimes enlightening, if you just go with it.

Reading Room, Paul Finch

AiOP began under director Ed Woodham’s leadership to encourage participation in the Cultural Olympiad of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. In 2005, in New York City, Woodham re-imagined AiOP as a response to the dwindling of public space and personal civil liberties – first in the Lower East Side and East Village and, since 2008, on 14th Street in Manhattan. AiOP has always been a grassroots project fueled by the goodwill and inventiveness of it participants. The festival has traveled the world before landing in Orlando.

“I’m hoping that the festival will engage the diverse cultural communities of Orlando,” said Ed Woodham, AiOP founder and director. “Just a few years ago, we were invited to take the event on the road to explore various themes in other locations around the world. To date, AiOP has spanned from Los Angeles to Russia and from Boston to Australia; and now we couldn’t be happier to bring it to the cultural destination of Orlando.”

What do we love more than a diverse and dynamic cultural event in The City Beautiful? A FREE diverse and dynamic event! You read that correctly — AiOP is free to attend. Exhibit times will vary daily. Here’s an overview of when you can find events going on:

Sept. 17, 6 – 9 p.m.
Sept. 18 & 19, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Sept. 20, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In addition to the festival’s interactive exhibits, these featured events will also take place:

  • AiOP Kickoff: Thursday, September 17 at 6 p.m. in conjunction with the Downtown Arts District’s monthly Third Thursday Gallery Hop, which also features numerous galleries and non-traditional art venues that spotlight the best of established and emerging local and non-local acclaimed artists. The Downtown Orlando Partnership will also be hosting “Taste of Downtown” from 6-9 p.m. in the Orange County Regional History Center’s courtyard, where festival-goers can indulge in some of Orlando’s culinary highlights and experience AiOP; also enjoy complimentary admission into the History Center.
  • Senior Day: Friday, September 18, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., includes performance groups, such as the acclaimed Downtowners from Lutheran Towers, along with additional  special programming.
  • Family Day: Saturday, September 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., ArtReach Orlando, an art outreach program that supports creative and collaborative art projects between teachers, organizations and local artists, offers family art activities that invite the public to engage more with the exhibits. The Orange County Regional History Center will offer complimentary admission to festival-goers from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Artists Panels: Occur at the Gallery on Avalon Island (upstairs) located at 39 S. Magnolia Ave. on Thursday, September 17 and Saturday, September 20, each at 7 p.m. The first panel will feature “What is AiOP?,” while the second will feature “TONE explored.”

SunRail Celebrates One Year, You Get Free Coffee

If you can believe it, it’s already been a year since Central Florida’s passenger rail started running. So if you haven’t taken a ride yet, this seems like a good time to give SunRail a try. In its first year, SunRail has gained a solid group of commuters and “just for fun” riders, as well as passionate group that wants more night and weekend trains. On Friday, May 1, to celebrate SunRail’s birthday, Clayton Alexander, a great businessman and coffee mug maker, will be offering free coffee, coffee cups and donuts at select stations, and there are different types of coffee which you can enjoy and buy online.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will join with Florida Department of Transportation District Secretary Noranne Downs to ride SunRail at 10 a.m. from DeBary to Downtown Orlando Friday morning. The City of Orlando encourages Central Florida residents to ride tomorrow and to use the hashtag #RideSunRailMay1.
“Keeping Orlando moving continues to be a priority for the City of Orlando with SunRail as the backbone of our growing transit system,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer who also is chairman of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission.  “With just a year of operation under its belt, SunRail has connected more of our residents with access to jobs and opportunity, spurred development and investment and laid the foundation for enhancing and growing our transportation options throughout our entire region.”

If you do get out and take the birthday ride, you can enjoy FREE donuts and coffee to start the morning off right, courtesy of Dunkin’ Donuts. The Dunkin’ Donuts sampling team will be at three SunRail stops on Friday, May 1 from 6-9 a.m. to treat commuters. Guests can enjoy Dunkin’ Donuts croissant donuts and the new One World hot coffee.

While the coffee and donuts are free, Note that regular SunRail fares still apply on May 1.

Happy birthday, SunRail!!

Music of the Movies Free Outdoor Concert

I vividly remember going to see the musical Bye, Bye Birdie in the park as a kid. Since then, I’ve had an intense love of outdoor arts events. Luckily, our outdoor event season here in Central Florida is much longer than most places, so we often have the chance to enjoy the arts along with some fresh [maybe humid] air. The Orlando Philharmonic is gearing up to treat us to a free outdoor concert on Saturday, April 18 in Loch Haven Park. Don’t waste this opportunity to simultaneously infuse your spring with some culture and some nature.

If you’ve never heard the Orlando Philharmonic play, you’re in for a treat. In its third annual free outdoor concert, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra performs Music of the Movies. Conducted by Chad Shoopman, the concert will feature a combination of themes from films such as “Jurassic Park,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Star Wars” and “The Incredibles,” as well as classical music popularized by movies. Don’t miss a special appearance by the cast of Orlando Repertory Theatre’s production of “Shrek the Musical.” Music of the Movies starts at 6 p.m.

Lounging in the park sounds like enough fun, but before the concert, you can visit the instrument petting zoo and enjoy entertainment by Mr. Richard & The Pound Hounds at 4 p.m., followed by the REP Power Chords at 5 p.m. Food trucks will be on hand to make sure your grumbling tummy doesn’t disrupt the concert.

The concert is funded by Dr. Phillips Charities, with additional sponsorship from Orlando Family Magazine. The concert will be performed in honor of Della Phillips, the wife of early citrus pioneer, Dr. Philip Phillips, once the largest producer of citrus in the world. Mrs. Phillips was known for her love of classical music, especially works by Mendelssohn, and for hosting outdoor concerts on the lawn of the Phillips family home on Lake Lucerne in downtown Orlando. Mrs. Phillips’ interest in music stemmed from early training in piano and music theory while attending private schools in New Orleans and Mobile.

This is an alcohol-free event, but you are encouraged to bring your own seating and picnic if you won’t be partaking in food truck fare. Leashed pets are permitted in the park. In the case of rain, call the Orlando Philharmonic Box Office to confirm the concert will take place as scheduled. Information at www.OrlandoPhil.org, or call 407-770-0071.

See you at the park!

RaceTrac’s Crazy Good Free Coffee Week will take place in all of RaceTrac’s 330+ locations from Dec. 16 – 22, 2012. No purchase or coupon is necessary.

Last year, RaceTrac completely re-vamped their coffee offering and the 2012 “Brew Fresh Fast 24/7” coffee program was a huge success. This year, RaceTrac is raising the coffee bar for the Crazy Good Coffee campaign. Besides highlighting the coffee offerings for the months of December and January, RaceTrac will also be offering free coffee to every guest who comes into their stores the week of Dec. 16 – 22, with no coupon or purchase necessary.

“We know once people come in and try our coffee, they’ll be coming back for more,” said RaceTrac Senior Vice President, RaceTrac division Allison Moran. “In the spirit of the holidays and as a way to show our guests that we appreciate them, we’ve gone crazy and are trying to see how many free cups of coffee we can give away in one week. You don’t even need a coupon- just walk in, grab a cup and enjoy.”

RaceTrac’s Crazy Good Coffee offering includes a line-up of six blends of fresh brewed coffee, including 100% Colombian Roast, Dark Roast, Hazelnut, Extra Caffeinated and more. RaceTrac alsouses 100% Arabica beans, brews coffee fresh 24/7 and has an expansive coffee bar area where guests can add flavors, creams and sugar to empower guests to be their own baristas. In addition to the traditional coffee blends offered at RaceTrac, the stores also offer an array of cappuccino and skinny cappuccino blends. Thanks to RaceTrac’s new 6,000 square foot model, called the RT6K, the coffee bar area has been expanded and truly has a coffee house feel which will welcome guests during the Crazy Good Coffee campaign.
