The Lawton House of Oviedo will host a Memorial Day ceremony to honor fallen Floridian military members. This free event is open to the public and includes the Presentation of Colors preceding a short program in memory of and to honor all U.S. service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend and protect our freedom.
The ceremony begins May 25 at 9 a.m. Guests are also invited to walk the grounds May 16-25, where hundreds of crosses represent lost Floridian military members. On May 15, volunteers will set up the crosses, and there will be a prayer vigil at 6:30 p.m. for the fallen service members. Local Girl Scout Troop 538 will also lay wreaths on the crosses as part of the vigil.
The Winter Park High School Bands will present two concerts in May to finish the band program’s 75th anniversary season. The Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Freshman Jazz Band will perform an array of music that showcases the bands’ tradition of musical excellence.
The Memorial Weekend Pops Concert will be held on Friday, May 22, and will include lighter works by Frank Ticheli, Chuck Mangione, and John Philip Sousa. It will feature our second senior concerto winner, Matthew Mignardi, on the famous Carnival of Venice. The concert will conclude with a salute to our nation with performances of the Armed Forces Salute, America the Beautiful, and Stars and Stripes Forever!
Concert begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Ann Derflinger Auditorium on the Winter Park High School main campus, 2100 Summerfield Road, Winter Park, FL 32792. Admission is free, and the public is warmly invited to attend.
